How long have you worked at Hargreaves Land and can you describe your role within the firm?

I joined Hargreaves after graduating from Glasgow Caledonian University with a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Management and Planning. I have now been working with the firm for 6 years.

During this time my role has transitioned from working to deliver restoration on surface mines to taking a leading role in managing our existing land portfolio, managing demolition and construction projects, masterplanning, and undertaking development appraisals for existing projects and site acquisitions.

What attracted you to a career in the property sector?

I didn’t set out for a career in the property sector and ended up here in a very roundabout way having joined Hargreaves to assist in restoration of the surface coal mining legacy in Scotland. However, I have always had a keen interest in sustainable land use and property development, so I feel I have arrived where I was always meant to be.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The aspect of my job that I enjoy the most is the wide variety of work; one minute I can be onsite assessing the condition of a building or culvert and the next I can be producing masterplans and appraisals for a major development project.

What has been your favourite project at Hargreaves Land?

My favourite project to date has been assisting with our St Ninians site, where I developed initial masterplans and development appraisals for a holiday and tourism led development on a restored surface mine, north of Dunfermline, Fife. This project allowed for creative and imaginative use of both brownfield and greenfield land with a lot of development potential, and included a wide range of stakeholder involvement.

What has been the highlight of your career

Achieving Chartered status with the RICS, becoming a Chartered Planning and Development Surveyor after two years of hard work and dedication.

What book did you read last?

The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out Of The Window and Disappeared, which I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend.
