Plans have been submitted for a new retail park on a plot of disused land at Albany Road in Gateshead which could support up to 170 jobs once operational.
Hargreaves Land and developer partner Fintry Estates, have proposed the mixed-use scheme for an 8.6-acre plot of land west of Albany Road, bordered by Park Lane and Quarryfields Road.
The planning application outlines a layout comprising a 21,625 sq ft food store, two other retail units spanning almost 20,000 sq ft each, plus three smaller retail units, a drive-thru coffee shop, two pubs and a gym.
The land is currently mostly vacant, though the Dynamix skate park occupies an industrial unit to the south of the site.
Though no occupiers have been confirmed at this stage, Hargreaves Land and Fintry Estates have attracted firm interest from several potential tenants.
The development would also include about 332 car parking spaces and hard and soft landscaping.
The planning statement, prepared by Lichfields on behalf of Hargreaves Land and Fintry Estates, added: “In summary, the development would represent significant investment in the local area and regenerate a key, under-used, site, at the gateway to the Baltic Business Quarter, improving the visual amenity of the area.”
The application will now be considered by Gateshead Council.
