Hargreaves Land has formulated a masterplan for the redevelopment of the former surface mine at Westfield, Fife.
At one time, Westfield was one of the largest surface mines in the UK, with coal extraction ceasing in c.1998.
Hargreaves acquired the site in 2013 and is committed to finding a solution for Westfield. Unlike previous owners, Hargreaves is not focused solely on coal production and has identified Westfield as a key development site. We believe that with the proper investment, the site location, scale and unique features can be exploited to create a visionary and innovative regeneration and development project.
Hargreaves’ proposals take an integrated approach to regenerating this historically impacted site. We will improve the biodiversity of the site, increase public accessibility and incorporate a range of renewable energy systems, including energy recovery from residual waste. This energy can then support other development proposals and a range of new business opportunities.
In bringing forward this Masterplan, Hargreaves Land is committed to open and widespread consultation. The purpose of this is to ensure that the local community and stakeholders have the opportunity to both comment and help shape the Masterplan.
